Working Professional and the Lottery
In yesterday’s post, I mentioned the fact that I’m an accountant. I’m pleased to say I don’t think of myself as your stereotypical, pocket-protector, calculator carrying accountant. While I did pass the CPA exam (by the skin of my teeth), I have absolutely no interest in doing taxes and it has been years since I have done accounting in the traditional sense. I mainly focus on budgeting and analysis which is a little less boring but, not by much. Why, you ask, do I stick with it if I am bored? Well, after 30 plus years, I’m looking at my career in the rear-view mirror and don’t want to take time away from crafting (tongue in cheek) to start out fresh in another career. More importantly, as a working mother of a teenager, I don’t want to waste any precious time away from my child before she starts to see me as the devil incarnate.
So what do I do to keep my sanity? I’m doing my best to support the state lottery system and I’m absolutely sure that I will defy the odds, win that big jackpot and one day be able to quit my job! No, really. That is my plan. However, I’m not naïve enough to think it will actually work and I definitely don’t endorse it as a retirement plan but some days ya gotta have a small measure of hope to get through the day. Someone wins eventually, right? Sometimes I read the annoying winner’s stories on the lottery website. I mean, really? I love it when they say it was the first time they ever played the lottery and were so surprised when they hit the trillion dollar jackpot! Or, even better yet, when they claim to have just had a feeling that they should play. Again, really?!? I have a feeling I should play every day but I never win! I do feel a little better when I run across a story about someone who has played faithfully and finally won. Makes me want to run right out to the nearest convenience store.
Just in case you are wondering, I use Turbo Tax to do my taxes. I’d be lost without it. I started using the desk top version of Turbo Tax then eventually converted to the online version. Turbo Tax has a wizard to guide even the most tax-challenged through the process from beginning to end.
